Audemars Piguet and a New Vision of Contemporary Time

The luxury industry increasingly proves that relevance no longer depends exclusively on heritage or craftsmanship alone. According to forecasts by Bain & Company and Fondazione Altagamma, global luxury spending continues operating above €1.4 trillion, confirming that clients increasingly invest not only in products, but in ideas, identity, and cultural value. Luxury today moves across different territories simultaneously. Fashion enters music. Art enters technology. Watchmaking enters conversations that once belonged to entirely separate worlds. The object itself remains important, though the story surrounding it often becomes equally powerful.

Few categories illustrate this shift more clearly than fine watchmaking. Luxury watches historically existed inside a world defined by technical precision and centuries-old craftsmanship. Today, however, watch culture increasingly expands into broader creative territory. Collectors no longer search exclusively for mechanical innovation or rarity; they increasingly seek emotional connection, cultural relevance, and collaborations capable of expressing personality through design. A timepiece can simultaneously function as engineering achievement, personal symbol, and collectible object while also carrying narratives that extend far beyond traditional horology.

This evolution explains why collaborations inside watchmaking changed so dramatically over the last decade. Musicians, artists, athletes, architects, and designers increasingly participate in shaping products rather than simply representing them. Luxury partnerships today function less like endorsements and more like conversations between different worlds. Very few maisons embraced this movement as naturally as Audemars Piguet, a Manufacture that repeatedly built bridges between watchmaking and contemporary culture without compromising technical excellence.

Founded in 1875 in Switzerland’s Vallée de Joux by Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet, Audemars Piguet established itself through an unusual balance between heritage and experimentation. Throughout its history, the Manufacture continuously explored dialogue with architecture, design, music, and artistic communities. Rather than treating craftsmanship as something fixed in time, the House repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to place traditional savoir-faire inside contemporary conversations. This openness ultimately became one of its defining characteristics.

That philosophy now receives another interpretation through a new Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Volant imagined alongside Yoon Ahn and Verbal — two figures whose creative identities developed across multiple disciplines and cultural spaces simultaneously. Their work consistently moved between fashion, music, visual culture, and design while avoiding conventional categories. Through their fashion label AMBUSH and broader creative projects, they developed a language built around individuality and perspective rather than short-term cycles or predictable trends.

The collaboration immediately feels deeply connected to their own creative philosophy. Rather than pursuing visual excess, Yoon and Verbal approached the project through an idea centered around intention, reduction, and personal expression. Their work frequently explores the relationship between what remains visible and what deserves greater attention, questioning how simplicity itself can become a stronger form of communication. Those ideas appear repeatedly throughout the design language of the watch.

Limited to 150 pieces, the new 38.5mm Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Volant introduces a visual identity balancing intensity with restraint. Executed entirely in titanium, the watch combines a shimmering black aventurine dial with a striking red flying tourbillon positioned prominently at its center. The contrast immediately creates visual energy, though the design itself avoids unnecessary complexity. The objective clearly extends beyond spectacle. Attention moves naturally toward the essentials.

At the center of the timepiece operates the Calibre 2982, partially visible beneath sapphire crystal through an open-worked architecture exposing the movement beneath. Mechanical precision becomes visible without overwhelming the overall composition. Complexity remains present, though expressed with discipline and clarity. The movement itself appears almost suspended within the structure, allowing timekeeping mechanics to become part of the visual experience.

The red flying tourbillon occupies a particularly important role inside the narrative of the watch. Positioned at the center, it functions almost as a visual anchor drawing attention inward while introducing movement and tension across the composition. Rather than acting purely as a technical feature, it also carries symbolic meaning connected to curiosity, focus, and the idea of returning attention toward what matters most.

For Verbal, the collaboration also carries a more personal dimension. The original Royal Oak Concept released in 2002 represented one of the most meaningful watches inside his own collection because it marked the beginning of a radically different vision for contemporary Haute Horlogerie. Although not his first Audemars Piguet piece, it became the model he connected with most deeply because of the emotion surrounding its introduction. That connection now creates a compelling dialogue between past and present.

The history itself remains important. Introduced in 2002 to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the Royal Oak, the original Royal Oak Concept challenged expectations through futuristic architecture and experimental materials inspired partly by concept cars. The first edition itself also appeared as a limited release of 150 pieces, creating a direct connection with the current collaboration and reinforcing continuity across generations of design.

Over the years, the Royal Oak Concept evolved into one of the Manufacture’s most experimental territories. New materials entered the collection, technical innovations expanded, and increasingly ambitious complications appeared while preserving a visual identity instantly recognizable to collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. The collection gradually transformed into a creative laboratory where technical mastery and unconventional thinking could coexist naturally.

Today, the collaboration with Yoon and Verbal reinforces that philosophy once again. It demonstrates that contemporary watchmaking increasingly belongs not only to engineers and collectors, but also to broader cultural conversations shaping how creativity itself evolves. Fashion, music, design, and craftsmanship no longer operate as isolated disciplines. They increasingly speak the same language. Audemars Piguet simply continues listening carefully to where that conversation leads next.
