Royal Oak RD#5 Marks a New Chapter

For centuries, watchmaking has balanced mechanical precision with continuous innovation. While craftsmanship remains the foundation of haute horlogerie, contemporary collectors increasingly value technical breakthroughs that improve both performance and everyday usability. The most influential developments are often those that refine the interaction between wearer and timepiece, proving that innovation is not limited to the movement alone but extends to every aspect of design and functionality.

Innovation continues to drive demand within the global watch industry. According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH), Swiss watch exports reached a record CHF 26.7 billion in 2024, reflecting sustained international demand for high-end mechanical timepieces despite broader economic uncertainty. The organisation also reported that watches priced above CHF 3,000 accounted for the overwhelming majority of export value, illustrating the resilience of the luxury segment. Complementing these findings, Deloitte’s Swiss Watch Industry Study found that technological innovation, product exclusivity, and technical craftsmanship remain among the most influential purchasing criteria for collectors and enthusiasts, reinforcing the growing importance of research and development within contemporary haute horlogerie.

Coinciding with its 150th anniversary, Audemars Piguet introduces the Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5, the final chapter of the Manufacture’s celebrated RD research series. Developed over five years, the limited edition of 150 timepieces combines two major complications with an entirely new movement engineered around ergonomics, mechanical performance, and user experience.

At the centre of the watch is the newly developed Calibre 8100, whose architecture has been completely redesigned and protected by multiple patents. For the first time within the Royal Oak collection, a flyback chronograph is combined with a flying tourbillon, while the movement also incorporates an instant-jump minute counter alongside an hour counter, a configuration rarely encountered in contemporary chronograph design.

Rather than focusing exclusively on mechanical complexity, the development programme placed equal emphasis on the physical interaction between wearer and watch. Audemars Piguet’s engineers conducted an extensive ergonomic study examining the movement, case construction, and controls, with the objective of making every function more intuitive to operate.

One of the most significant innovations concerns the chronograph pushers positioned on either side of the crown. Conventional chronographs typically require substantial travel and pressure before activation. The RD#5 introduces an entirely re-engineered mechanism that dramatically reduces both the movement of the pusher and the force required to operate it, creating a noticeably more responsive tactile experience inspired by the precision of modern electronic interfaces while preserving the traditions of fine mechanical watchmaking.

The crown itself has also been redesigned through an integrated function selector featuring a discreet push-button and visual indicator that allows the wearer to alternate between winding and time-setting positions. The system replaces the traditional crown configuration inherited from pocket watches while maintaining the recognisable proportions of the Royal Oak case.

To preserve the exceptionally slim profile of the “Jumbo” despite the addition of two major complications, the Manufacture developed specially engineered sapphire “glass box” crystals for both the front and back of the case. Flat on the exterior and hollowed internally, these crystals provide additional space for the movement and rotating hands without increasing the watch’s overall thickness.

The timepiece is crafted from titanium and bulk metallic glass (BMG), a highly durable material distinguished by its remarkable hardness, corrosion resistance, and luminous finish. The combination offers an exceptional balance between strength, lightness, and refined aesthetics while highlighting the Manufacture’s continuing research into advanced materials.

The Royal Oak RD#5 also represents the conclusion of a decade-long programme dedicated to experimental watchmaking. Looking ahead, Audemars Piguet is introducing AP Fabrication Laboratories, dedicated spaces designed to accelerate research, prototyping, material development, métiers d’art, ergonomics, and interdisciplinary collaboration. These facilities establish a permanent platform for future innovation as the Manufacture enters the next chapter of its history.

With the Royal Oak RD#5, Audemars Piguet concludes one of the most significant research programmes in contemporary watchmaking. The timepiece demonstrates that technical innovation can extend beyond mechanical complexity, redefining how collectors experience and interact with haute horlogerie while preserving the craftsmanship that continues to define the Royal Oak collection.
