Fragrance occupies a distinctive place within this creative landscape, bringing together chemistry, botany, design, and artistic interpretation. Behind every perfume stands not only a formula but also the vision of the individual who composes it, making perfumers some of the most influential yet least visible creative voices in fashion.
This dialogue between artistic vision and technical precision forms the foundation of Jil Sander’s Olfactory Series 1. With six new compositions joining the original collection, the house continues to explore fragrance through the perspective of the perfumers themselves, inviting them to translate personal memories, everyday rituals, and natural surroundings into scent.
Each fragrance begins with a remarkably restrained structure. Built around three principal natural ingredients and the distinctive presence of aldehydes, the compositions demonstrate how a limited palette can produce unexpectedly varied results. Familiar moments become the starting point: the freshness of an early morning walk, the sensation of floating in water, or the atmosphere of a place remembered long after leaving it. Rather than relying on complexity for its own sake, every formula searches for clarity through carefully considered construction.
Aldehydes provide the common thread connecting all twelve fragrances. Long recognised for their ability to transform traditional raw materials, these synthetic molecules alter the perception of familiar ingredients, introducing brightness, transparency, and an almost abstract quality. Their presence creates continuity across the collection while allowing each perfumer to develop an entirely individual interpretation. The project also reflects Jil Sander’s longstanding approach to design, where restraint often reveals greater complexity. Details are frequently intended first for the wearer, establishing a personal relationship between object and owner. Fragrance naturally follows this philosophy. Its presence often remains after a person has left a room, quietly recalling a conversation, a place, or a particular moment through memory rather than appearance.
This careful attention extends beyond the fragrance itself. Created together with the design studio Formafantasma, each bottle combines industrial manufacturing with handcrafted variation. Slight differences in the distribution of the glass ensure that no two pieces appear completely identical, while the white aluminium cap shields the fragrance from light before transforming each application into a deliberate, almost ceremonial gesture.
With the addition of six new creations, Olfactory Series 1 becomes more than an expanding fragrance collection. It also offers a portrait of the contemporary perfumer, where scientific knowledge, artistic sensitivity, and personal experience meet in compositions that quietly redefine how scent can communicate identity, memory, and emotion.
