Longchamp Celebrates Jeremy Scott Through a Retrospective Exhibition

by s.elective

Fashion has always been shaped by individuals whose creative vision extends beyond the collections they design. While trends evolve from season to season, the personalities behind them often leave the most enduring mark on the industry, influencing not only aesthetics but also the way audiences perceive luxury, creativity, and cultural identity. Designers who sustain a distinctive creative language over decades become important voices within fashion, contributing to conversations that reach far beyond the runway. Their work often reflects the changing relationship between fashion, art, popular culture, and contemporary society.

The growing influence of creative personalities is reflected across the luxury industry. According to the Deloitte Global Powers of Luxury Goods 2024 report, consumers increasingly value authentic storytelling and creative heritage when engaging with luxury brands, reinforcing the importance of individuals who shape a maison’s identity over many years. Supporting this perspective, the Kantar BrandZ Most Valuable Global Brands 2025 report notes that meaningful brand differentiation is increasingly driven by creativity and distinctive cultural relevance rather than product alone. Fashion historian Valerie Steele, Director of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, has observed that “Fashion is one of the most powerful forms of visual communication.” Her observation illustrates why designers who develop an unmistakable creative voice continue to influence fashion long after individual collections have disappeared from the runway. Their contribution often becomes part of a brand’s history, shaping its identity for future generations.

Longchamp celebrates twenty years of collaboration with American designer Jeremy Scott through a special anniversary exhibition presented at La Maison Unique, the Maison’s flagship boutique in New York’s SoHo district. Rather than focusing solely on a single collection, the retrospective examines two decades of creative dialogue between one of France’s leading luxury leather goods houses and one of fashion’s most recognisable designers. Bringing together archival designs, iconic accessories, large-scale installations, and new creations, the exhibition reflects the evolution of a partnership that has become one of the longest-running collaborations in contemporary luxury fashion.

The anniversary celebration welcomed personalities from across the creative industries, including actresses Zoey Deutch, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kate Mara, Emma Roberts, Ashley Benson, Anna Cathcart, Dascha Polanco, Bianca Lawson, and Nikki Rodriguez, together with singer Lourdes Leon, models Coco Rocha, Joan Smalls, Martha Hunt, Aariana Phillip, and CT Hedden. Amanda Lepore, Aquaria, Symone, photographer Andrew Tess, internet personality Victoria Brito, podcast host Bailey Taylor, and DJ collective The Misshapes also joined the celebration, reflecting the broad creative community surrounding both Longchamp and Jeremy Scott. Could any contemporary designer have approached accessories with quite the same combination of humour, theatricality, and pop culture references over the past two decades?

The exhibition, Jeremy Scott for Longchamp, remains open to the public through mid-June and offers visitors a chronological journey through the collaboration. Early designs appear alongside more recent editions, illustrating how a single accessory can continually be reinterpreted while remaining instantly recognisable. The retrospective also reflects Longchamp’s commitment to supporting artistic expression by presenting fashion within a broader cultural context, encouraging dialogue between established creatives and emerging talent.

To mark the anniversary, the façade of La Maison Unique has been transformed into a monumental installation inspired by Scott’s original Telephone Le Pliage design. Displayed against a striking turquoise background, the installation revisits one of the earliest chapters of the collaboration while introducing visitors to the exhibition before they enter the boutique.

The occasion also introduces the limited-edition Le Pliage Greetings from New York. Created exclusively for the anniversary, the design celebrates the city that has hosted this milestone event and is available only through Longchamp’s New York boutiques and the Maison’s official online platform.

Jeremy Scott has spent more than three decades establishing one of the most distinctive creative identities in contemporary fashion. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, he studied fashion design at Pratt Institute in New York before relocating to Paris, where he launched his namesake label during the late 1990s. From the beginning of his career, his collections stood apart through references to advertising, cartoons, popular culture, consumer products, and American iconography. His work challenged conventional luxury by introducing irony and humour into high fashion without compromising technical craftsmanship.

Scott quickly became recognised for transforming everyday objects into fashion statements, introducing garments inspired by household products, fast food packaging, toys, and comic imagery. These references became part of a broader creative philosophy that questioned traditional ideas of luxury while celebrating visual culture familiar to a global audience. His collections frequently combined bold colours, exaggerated proportions, and graphic motifs, creating an instantly recognisable aesthetic.

Throughout his career, Scott has collaborated with numerous international brands while maintaining the independence of his own creative vision. His partnership with adidas Originals produced some of the sportswear industry’s most collectible designs, including the famous winged sneakers that became internationally recognised. He also worked across costume design, performance wardrobes, and special creative projects, expanding his influence beyond the fashion calendar.

From 2013 until 2023, Scott served as Creative Director of Moschino, leading one of the industry’s most theatrical creative transformations. During his tenure, he revisited the Italian house’s playful heritage while introducing collections inspired by children’s television, consumer packaging, historical costume, paper dolls, architecture, and fine art. His runway presentations regularly attracted worldwide attention for their originality and visual storytelling, reinforcing his reputation as one of fashion’s most imaginative designers.

Despite their humour, Scott’s collections consistently demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of fashion history and construction. His work balanced references drawn from contemporary culture with couture techniques, illustrating how craftsmanship and creativity can coexist without contradiction. This ability to merge entertainment with technical excellence became one of the defining characteristics of his career.

The collaboration with Longchamp began in 2006 and introduced a fresh interpretation of the Maison’s iconic Le Pliage bag. Across two decades, Scott repeatedly reimagined the familiar silhouette through playful graphic concepts, transforming it into designs inspired by telephones, postcards, passports, zodiac symbols, city landmarks, and numerous other cultural references. Each edition remained unmistakably Le Pliage while introducing a completely new visual narrative.

The longevity of this partnership distinguishes it from many contemporary collaborations, which often exist for only a limited number of seasons. By continually revisiting a single design through different creative perspectives, Scott demonstrated how an established luxury accessory can remain relevant without abandoning its original identity.

The retrospective at La Maison Unique therefore represents more than an anniversary exhibition. It offers an opportunity to examine how a designer’s creative language can influence the identity of a luxury house over an extended period while illustrating the enduring value of artistic continuity within an industry defined by constant change.
